Best Free Database Services (DBaaS)
Supabase, PlanetScale, Neon, MongoDB Atlas.
Serverless Database Services (DBaaS)
Database as a Service (DBaaS) platforms eliminate the need to provision, manage, and scale database servers manually. The latest generation of "serverless" databases also scale compute to zero when inactive, making them highly cost-effective.
1. Supabase (PostgreSQL)
Supabase is an open-source alternative to Firebase, built entirely on top of PostgreSQL. It provides a full backend, including an auto-generated RESTful API (PostgREST), real-time subscriptions, and authentication.
Why Supabase?
- Full access to raw SQL and Postgres extensions like PostGIS.
- Built-in Row Level Security (RLS).
- Edge functions for custom logic.
Free Tier Details: 500MB database size, 2GB bandwidth, and pauses after 1 week of inactivity.
2. PlanetScale (MySQL)
PlanetScale is a highly scalable MySQL-compatible database platform built on Vitess (the same technology that scales YouTube). It is known for its branching workflow, treating database schemas like Git branches.
Note: PlanetScale recently removed its completely free tier in favor of a low-cost starter plan, but it remains a critical tool worth mentioning for its developer experience.
3. Neon (Serverless Postgres)
Neon is a serverless Postgres platform that separates storage and compute. This architecture allows it to instantly scale compute resources and pause them when not in use. It also supports instant database branching.
Free Tier Details: Includes 0.5 GB of storage, point-in-time restore, and one project.
4. MongoDB Atlas
For NoSQL document databases, MongoDB Atlas is the standard. It provides a fully managed MongoDB instance across AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Free Tier Details: The M0 Free Cluster provides 512MB of storage, shared RAM, and basic monitoring metrics. It never expires.
5. Upstash (Redis)
Upstash provides serverless Redis databases. Redis is an in-memory data store frequently used for caching, rate limiting, and managing session state.
Free Tier Details: Upstash charges per request rather than for idle time. The free tier allows up to 10,000 requests per day.
