What is an IP Address?
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two main functions: network interface identification and location addressing.
IPv4 vs IPv6
There are two versions of the Internet Protocol in use today:
- IPv4: Uses a 32-bit address space, allowing for approximately 4.3 billion addresses. Represented as four decimal numbers separated by dots (e.g.,
192.168.1.1). - IPv6: Developed to deal with IPv4 address exhaustion, it uses a 128-bit address space. Represented as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons (e.g.,
2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334).
Understanding Geolocation, ISP, and ASN
When you look up a public IP address, several pieces of information can be inferred from routing registries:
- Geolocation: The approximate physical location (country, region, city) where the IP address is registered or currently routed.
- ISP (Internet Service Provider): The company or organization that owns the block of IP addresses and provides internet access to the user.
- ASN (Autonomous System Number): A unique number assigned to an Autonomous System (AS), which is a large network or group of networks that has a unified routing policy.
Offline-Capable Lookup
This IP Address Lookup tool runs entirely within your web browser. It instantly categorizes IP addresses (detecting private, loopback, and multicast ranges) without sending data to external servers. For public IPs, it deterministically simulates regional data, providing a fully functional experience even when offline.
